Sun, wind and rain are hard on signs, and so is being pulled up and moved from job to job. How long a sign lasts depends mostly on three choices: the material, how it is mounted, and how long you need it.
Corrugated plastic for weeks and months
Most yard signs are printed on 4mm corrugated plastic, which stands up to sun, wind and rain. It is light, low cost and easy to place, which makes it the usual choice for campaigns, job-site signs, events and promotions that run for weeks or months.
Aluminum for signs that stay up for years

Banners in the wind
A solid vinyl banner works well against a wall or in a sheltered spot. On a fence or scaffolding in open, windy places, choose a mesh banner. Its perforated material lets wind pass through, which lowers the strain on the banner and its ties. Grommets and reinforced edges help either type hold up when it is hung outdoors.
