Elections are right around the corner and it’s time to ramp up the campaigning! Often an incumbent’s biggest advantage over an opponent is pure name recognition. It’s been said that senators have about 75% name recognition after a year in office and 90% after a second year in office. Incumbents who ran for reelection since WWII were successful 90% of the time. Whether you’re an incumbent or a newcomer, it’s clear that name recognition is one of the keys to getting elected. Citizens won’t vote for someone they have never heard of.
Bird is the Word!
The most important part of the campaign sign is the name. The name is always large and usually focuses on the last name alone. It makes it easier for someone who’s driving by to read just that one word, and get it ingrained in their head. The second most important part of the campaign sign is the position name. It’s not enough to know the candidate. The voters need to know what they’re running for. Make sure this is clear, and fairly large on the side. If there are only two things a voter takes away from the sign, it should be the candidate’s name and what they’re running for.
A campaign sign is usually not the place to sell your platform to the constituency, but a way to make your community know that you exist. This way, they will start to pay attention when they hear your name in the news and local politics. For this reason, it’s wise to keep any information about a candidate’s platform summed up to a single line that is clear, concise and falls in line with what the candidate is saying in the media.
On another note, it’s also very common to see red, white and blue signs. Although the scheme might not be for everyone, it does make it easier for a viewer to realize they are looking at a campaigning candidate’s sign.
Campaign signs are the first step in the campaigning process. It’s a quick, cheap and effective way to let voters know who’s out there and what their campaign revolves around. Good luck and happy campaigning!
